Are Graphic images of War necessary?

As we watch “Control Room” and touch on the questions of what images media do and don’t show of war, take a look at  (and listen to) Bradley Campbell’s story on PRI World, which examines both sides of the issue.  We don ‘t often show graphic images of war, but as journalist Peter Maass says, for him it’s not so simple. “This stuff is ghastly, it’s terrible,” he says. “But unless you are confronted with it, I believe, you can’t get to the depths of it, and you can’t kind of reach the level of understanding and, perhaps, revulsion that one should.”
